Admission Procedure for Teacher Training Course in the United Kingdom

Application Process-Apply and Track

Teacher training courses are available at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. You can apply online for teacher training courses through UCAS teacher training at  APPLY.

You need to enter your personal details, program choices, secondary and higher education and qualification achieved, school and work experience. Apart from the essentialities, you also need to write a personal statement and get two references.
  • Personal Statement: It must include reasons for wanting to teach, previous education and work experience details, skills and abilities you can bring to teaching, and why UK for this subject area. It is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your qualities, skills and expertise to the education providers. The personal statement must not exceed 4000 characters or 47 lines of text including spaces.

  • References: Two references are required- one from your academic front, someone who can comment your academic potential, abilities and skills and another from your workplace who can annotate your character. The references must be sent online.
After entering all the required details, pay the fee online using a debit or credit card and send in your application.

Academic Requirements

You need to have an undergraduate degree awarded by UK higher education provider or a recognized equivalent qualification. You’ll need to have achieved a standard equivalent to grade C or above in the GCSE examinations in English and mathematics. If you intend to teach students aged 3-11, you must also have attained a standard equivalent to a grade C or above in a GCSE science subject examination.

Non-Academic Requirements

This includes Classroom experience and Medical fitness. You must possess at least two weeks' classroom experience before you begin teacher training. Some applicants may also be asked to have a medical examination.

Selection Process

Interviews

Interviews are a part of the selection process for this subject area. Before you can be offered a spot in the program, you'll have to go to an interview. Be prepared and confident. Know about your application details thoroughly.  Stay calm and focussed!

Professional Skills Tests

All applicants to Initial Teacher Training need to pass the professional skills tests before starting their course. The professional skill tests consists of- the numeracy and literacy skill tests.
  • Numeracy Tests: In this test, you need to show a high degree of ability in numeracy in all areas of work in school. The numeracy skills test is a computerised test of 48 minutes, comprising questions based on: mental arithmetic, interpreting and solving written arithmetic problems. 
  • Literacy Tests: In this test, you need to show a high level of literacy ability in all areas of work in school. The literacy professional skills test for trainee teachers is a computerised test of 36 minutes, consisting of three sections: spelling, grammar and comprehension. 
You'll ascertain in Track what decision each training provider has made on your application after the interviews or skills tests (if required) are conducted. Training providers can make the following decisions:
  • Unconditional Offer: Means you’ve acquired a steady position in the course of study.
  • Conditional Offer: Means you’ve an offer of a place as long as you satisfy some conditions.
  • Withdraw: Means if you don't go for an interview or don't respond to correspondence then the training provider will withdraw the application.
  • Reject:  Signifies your application has been unsuccessful
  • Not qualified in English, maths or science:  Signifies that you do not have a GCSE at a high enough grades in one or more of these subjects

Replying

Once you've received decisions from all your choices you have 10 working days to respond to whatever offers you've got. You must reply to your offers in Track.
