English Language Course in the UK

According to the Study Travel Magazine, December 2012, the UK is the number one destination worldwide for English language study, attracting 49.5% of all students who join an English language course abroad.
Across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, there are many English language courses. Each year, thousands of students from around the globe come to the United Kingdom for an English language course.

Applying Ways and Means

While choosing an English language centre for the Course, the topmost priority is to make sure the centre is reputable and recognised by the UK government and educational bodies. There are a number of accreditation and inspection bodies in the UK. Choose a centre that is Licensed as a Tier 4 sponsor by the UK Border Agency; or Inspected by one of the following bodies:

Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted), Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education in Scotland, Estyn, Her Majesty's Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales, Northern Ireland's Education and Training Inspectorate and Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI); or Accredited by one of the following bodies:
  • Accreditation UK, a British Council and English UK scheme which offers an accreditation service for English language schools;
  • Accreditation Body for Language Services (ABLS), an accreditation service for English language schools;
  • The British Accreditation Council (BAC) and The Accreditation Service for International Colleges (ASIC), offers a more general accreditation service covering a wide range of educational establishments and their courses;
  • The Accreditation Body for Language Services (ABLS), provides an accreditation service for English language providers.
All English language centres manage their own admissions. Visit the English language centre’s website or contact them directly to find out more about them.

English Language Course: Entry Requirements

Every English language centre sets its own entry requirements. For some courses, you may have to show proof of your English language skills – either by taking a test set by the centre, or by demonstrating you have English language qualifications.

Dates and Deadlines

There are no set deadlines for applying to an English language course – you can apply at any time.

Study Modes

English language courses can be part-time or full-time. Full-time courses include around 15 to 24 hours of classes per week.  Holiday and vacation courses are also available in the summer. A large number of UK English language centres have established campuses overseas, thereby making it easy for students to learn English.
