Admission Procedure for Performing Arts in United Kingdom

Conservatoire education is suited for students wishing to expand and develop themselves to a professional standard. Such education offers practical and theoretical training, combined with professional development. The UK is well-served by colleges of music and arts. Any music, dance or drama courses in the UK are administered by the Conservatoires UK Admissions Service (CUKAS) at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of studies.

Application Process- Apply and Track

You can apply online for dance, drama and music courses through the Conservatoires UK Admissions Service (CUKAS). Register yourself at CUKAS (Website: https://www.ucas.com/) and then fill in your application by logging in to your account using username and password at LOGIN . Enter your details correctly, the course you want to study, and other necessary information. Pay the application fee online using credit or debit card.

Entry Requirements

For most performing arts courses you’ll need to go to an audition, send a recording of your work, or a portfolio to each conservatoire you apply. The entry requirements differ for each course and conservatoire. For music, dance or drama, your practical skills and abilities are being tested via audition or interview. GCE qualification- AS and A levels are also considered for some courses.

English Language Requirement

If English is not your first language, most conservatoires will want you to have a qualification in English or to take a specified test in English. This will convey the conservatoire that you will be able to cope with the course. To find out which English language proficiency tests are acceptable, you should contact the admissions office or international office for each conservatoire that you wish to apply to. Generally TOEFL/IELTS scores are accepted.

Documentation

Below listed documents must be submitted along with the application:
  • Personal Statement: Include your reasons for choosing the courses you've listed, what interests you about your chosen study area, membership of national and/or international orchestras, choirs or chamber groups, details of skills and achievement you've gained through extracurricular activities and mention your future plans.  If you're an international student, mention your reasons of why you opted to study in the UK.
  • References: Two references are a must. Details of two referees must be provided: one to annotate on your academic ability and the other to comment on your practical ability, potential and skills. The referees must post a copy of your reference to each of the conservatoires you have chosen.
  • Academic Credentials: Scores/Results reports of all the qualification achieved.

Auditions

You can check if you’re being invited to the audition by tracking your application through the online tracking system. The audition process varies between conservatoires. Performer auditions include two or more contrasting pieces that demonstrate their technique and musicality. If you live in the UK, you’re audition will be in person at your chosen conservatoire, but if you live outside the UK, you can go for audition at an international audition centre, if available, or record your audition and send a DVD of the same. Musicians are needed to play or sing scales or take an aural test, thereby proving their technical abilities. Composers and applicants in other non-performance areas are required to submit a portfolio, video or other proof of practical ability in lieu of an audition. An interview may also be taken. If you are applying from overseas, you are required to submit an additional work to support your portfolio.

  • Audition fees: Auditions for performance-based music, dance and drama courses are carried around the globe, having different fees depending on the course and conservatoire chosen. Whether you audition in person or by recording, you will require to pay an audition fee.
