Mathematics Admission Test in UK
The MAT-Mathematics Admission tests is a 2 hour 30 minute paper-based subject-specific admission test for applicants wanting to study the University of Oxford’s undergraduate degree courses in Mathematics, Computer Science and their joint degree courses. You can sit for MAT at your school or college. If you don’t go to a school or college, you will necessitate to find an open centre where you can take the test. All students applying for the following courses at the University of Oxford and Imperial College London respectively are required to take the MAT.
- University of Oxford: Computer Science (G400), Computer Science and Philosophy (IV15), Mathematics (G100), Mathematics and Computer Science (GG14), Mathematics and Philosophy (GV15) and Mathematics and Statistics (GG13).
- Imperial College London: Mathematics (G100, 3-year course), Mathematics (G103, 4-year course), Mathematics (Pure Mathematics) (G125), Mathematics, Optimization and Statistics (GG31), Mathematics with a Year in Europe (G104), Mathematics with Applied, Mathematics/Mathematical Physics (G1F3), Mathematics with Mathematical Computation (G102), Mathematics with Statistics (G1G3) and Mathematics with Statistics for Finance (G1GH).
Participating Universities
The MAT is used by the University of Oxford and Imperial College London. The Admissions Testing Service works in partnership with these institutions to manage and regulate the MAT (Mathematics Admission Tests).
Format
The test is of 2 hours 30 minutes comprises of 7 questions, of which 5 should be attempted.
The first question on the test is multiple-choice and contains 10 parts, each worth 4 marks. Questions 2-7 are longer questions, each worth 15 marks. Following are the directions for the questions to attempt or appropriate for your course:
For Oxford Applicants
If you are applying to Oxford for the following degree course: Mathematics or Mathematics & Philosophy or Mathematics & Statistics, you should attempt Questions 1,2,3,4,5; Mathematics & Computer Science, you should go for Questions 1,2,3,5,6 and Computer Science or Computer Science & Philosophy, you should do questions 1,2,5,6,7.
For Imperial Applicants
If you are applying to Imperial College for any of these Mathematics courses: Mathematics, Mathematics (Pure Mathematics), Mathematics with a Year in Europe, Mathematics with Applied Mathematics/Mathematical Physics , Mathematics with Mathematical Computation , Mathematics with Statistics , Mathematics with Statistics for Finance and Mathematics Optimisation and Statistics , then you should go for Questions 1,2,3,4,5.
Registration
All entries must be made by the test centre administering the MAT. You can sit for Mathematics Admission Test at your school or college. If you don’t go to a school or college, you can still appear for the tests at an open centre. To find a centre, visit www.admissionstesting.org
Fees
No fee is being charged by the Admissions Testing Service for the MAT. Some open centres may charge an administrative fee.
